Begun in 70AD, the Colosseum is the most iconic monument of Ancient Rome and the largest amphitheatre ever built, having seating for 50k and a sail-like roof covering. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, wild animal hunts, executions, reenactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. Open daily, 8:30am–7:15pm. €12 (€7.50 reduced) includes admission to Palatine Hill/Roman Forum.
